Nacho Ordinary Nachos

September 9, 2007 / by aimeelauren

Oh Israel, how you make me laugh. A few weeks ago, my friends and I went to do karaoke at a bar near school. None of us had eaten any dinner and it was getting close to 11 so we decided to order some nachos. I have no idea what we were thinking- something about chips and "cheese" with salsa sounded really good at the time. Well, our waitress informed us that the kitchen wasn't open yet... please not the time- 11 pm. Yeah, kitchen wasn't open... Ok.. so we wait. And wait. And by midnight we really wanted those nachos really badly. Finally, they arrived. We all look down at the plate and decide this is a serious photo op. The "nachos" were heavily seasoned pita chips in a bowl, served with sweet and sour sauce. In what country would those pass as nachos??? Seriously. Bummer.

School started last week, and I'm not failing any classes yet. On the contrary- all of my work is done for the whole week and I've started doing my readings for October. Talk about turning over a new leaf! I think I'm a completely different tree. I really enjoy my classes (well, except for one... there's always one...) and it's going to be a lot of hard work, especially after the holidays when our community service starts.

Today we started the Elul Program for the few days preceding the High Holy Days- or to really impress you with my skills the Yamim Noraim. We talked (actually, we mostly listened and sometimes not very well) about all different kinds of repentance, or teshuva. Our dean, Rabbi Marmur (whom I would like to shrink and carry around in my pocket all day and listen to him talk) said something I found to be quite incredible. First, background. I guess I have just been walking around Jerusalem, and Israel for that matter and not really thinking about what that means. It has felt like just another place to live- I have a routine, I hang out with my friends, I go to dance classes... and this whole time I really didn't realize how much I was taking for granted. So today, Rabbi Marmur said that if you consider Jewish History, and World History as a whole, "it's still remarkable that we're all sitting here (in our elul program), even if you take the hyperbole out of it." He's right- it's remarkable.

Shana Tova to everyone! Have a wonderful, sweet New Year. Eat lots of challah, apples, and honey-- maybe some brisket and matzo ball soup! Love you!
